Course 132: Walpole CC

Walpole CC

Walpole, Mass.

Played: September 9, 2024

Yardage: 6,628/4,306

Tier: Regional Chain

Rating: 2

WCC has two main defenses: a narrow, tree-lined routing and fast greens.

I played on a MassGolf member day from the white tees at 6,100 yards. The tips play 6,660, which is probably where I would play if I were to return.

The holes are narrow as a collection with plenty of doglegs (2, 8, 13, 14, 16). The longest par 4s (5, 8, 10, 18) are straight without much room for dispersion. The 5s are all scoreable with corners to be cut for the brave player but jeopardy awaits if you’re even just a little offline. The par 3s are a nice group of varied lengths. The bunkers are big and bold and grab your attention.

The greens played fast and rolled very true. However, the shots into the greens weren’t dynamic or all that engaging overall. It felt like the only goal all day was to stay below the pin, and some of the pins we saw were pretty wild. The set of greens didn’t have a lot of interesting interior sloping or tiers.

The standout holes were 2 and 10.

The 2nd has a unique mound of three bunkers on the corner of the dogleg that certainly tempts players to take it on. The uphill approach is made tougher the farther a player steers away from those daunting bunkers. A bit of a false front can send balls way from the green.

The 10th is straightaway, but a massive mound on the right pushes players to the left where a line of trees sits. A mid-iron second shot to a raised green needs to have the right distance bc long is absolutely dead.

The routing is a bit odd, especially on the back nine. It feels a bit jumbled after the 13th hole. The walk from 15 to 16 is long. We turned around before reaching the tee, thinking we were lost. We weren’t... we just “hadn’t walked far enough” according to a staff member who saw us wandering.

Overall, the conditions were excellent, and it feels like that’s always the case at WCC. The course is tough the first time around with blind shots and tricky lines off of certain tee boxes combined with fast greens.
