CC of Wilbraham falls in the bucket of extreme woodland, New England golf.
It has a preponderance of trees that line holes and block angles off tees and into greens.
The journey from the tee to each green felt rather redundant, but the highlight of the course is the greens.
The front nine's greens slope severely back-to-front. Even putting across them from pin high was a challenge. Their shapes weren't terribly interesting, as most of them were very round in shape, but some tiers provided interior slope.
The back nine, which is the newer nine, had greens with some more shape to them; they were also solid and required accuracy and good green reading skills. They were in excellent shape, and I'd hate to see them any faster than they were during our round.
The front nine is the better nine, by far. The third hole is kind of a disaster, with trees literally blocking any and all approach shots. Many of the holes are straight, and most of them hug the boundary of the property with hazard and OB along the right side of most holes. The first and ninth were the best of the bunch as they released the pressure valve and had more space to play.
The back nine might be one of the oddest nine holes I've played. After the short par 3 10th, which is basically a way to shorten the walk from the 9th green to the 11th tee, it's bowling alley golf with trees tightly lining every hole. Most are doglegs and require very specific distances off the tee so as not to be blocked out by trees. The sensation is that each tee shot needs to be steered into place. It's a shame because the trees mask the rolling Western Mass. land that the holes play across.
I'd pick the par-3 14th as the best on the back nine. A long iron to a green with a false front was a nice breather.
CCoW is a course I couldn't imagine playing on a regular basis. It's just too tight and repetitive over all 18 holes.
