Miacomet means “Meeting Place” in Wampanoag, and it’s exactly the kind of place I would love to meet friends for a round of golf any season.

The golf course is outstanding, and my trip with @boston_golfer was timed to snag the off-season rate of $70. The prices jump to $145 and then $245 as the season progresses, but I’d venture to say in peak season, on Nantucket, it’s still worth your money to play.

Why?

You’re playing a superb public course in exceptional condition. The fairways were firm and fast and lovely to play from. The greens, having been recently punched, rolled nicely and didn’t impact our enjoyment at all.

The land is rather flat, and the holes are often hemmed in by bunkers or boundary lines. However, the wind creates uphill and downhill sensations.

I think I preferred the back 9 a little more than the front; it’s a bit more challenging and the holes are just a touch better and more interesting. The green sites on the back made me stop and take notice a bit more, too. Holes 3-9 are in this separate piece of property that is lovely but feels a bit boxed in.

The best stretch of golf on the course is holes 10-14. Standing on the 10th tee makes it immediately clear this is going to be a different type of golf than the front. The approach into the small, raised, well-protected tenth hole can set the tone for the rest of the round. If you’re not feeling sharp, the next 5 holes might steal your lunch money.

For me, the most distracting part of the experience was some of the green-to-tee walks. Going from the 2nd green across the parking lot to the third tee was odd and then holes 15-17 all have long walks between them. It’s a minor thing when the course is so good, but it certainly stuck out.

The most striking aspect of the course is its presentation. Some of the bunkers have that “splatter” look can be a little corny when overused. But it looks excellent when it contrasts with sharply cut edges in other places.

Make a point to play Miacomet. Any season will highlight that it is a superb public golf option.
