Weston GC is an old-school charmer that provides various challenges throughout the 18 holes. The greens are the main character of the round. Some are big and brawny with wild interior slopes that require careful attention from the fairway on approach shots and with a wedge or flat stick in hand. Others have that classic Donald Ross touch: round and sloped. It’s not a combination I have seen all that often, but I appreciated the variety a lot.
There’s also a variety to the routing of the course. The opening 5 holes on one side of Meadowbrook Rd are rather flat, with the second and third holes playing up and down a hill. Then the course winds through some tight, somewhat claustrophobic land for the rest of the front nine. A good tee shot on the 7th hole rewards players with a thrilling shot over water to a small, sliver of a green.
After the challenging 9th, the course returns to some more open land; however, water comes into play on holes 11 and 12. Then 13 winds hard to the left to another diabolical green with a massive false front.
The closing four holes then wind back around the pro shop along the edge of the property. It’s a good closing stretch with a mix two par 4s (15 and 16), a par 3 (17), and par 5 (18).
18 is one of the better finishing holes I’ve played. A reachable par 5; the green is another big one with a ridge running through the middle. It’s scorable with disasters available, too.
Along with 18, the standout holes for me were the 4th and 17th.
The 4th has some visual trickery off the tee, a left bunker looks close enough to reach and pushes players to hit out to the right. But that’s where the actual reachable bunker sits. The 4th green is awesome, with a basin of short grass in the back and the front of the green running away. It’s wide and undulating.
The 17th is a lovely drop-shot par 3. The shortest on the course and caps off a solid set of par 3s overall. Another cool green that is angled enough to make for a mix of pins that can lengthen the hole when firing to a back left pin.
Weston was in excellent shape and offers a steady challenge throughout the 18 holes.
